Many homeowners believe that floods are a problem only during the spring. But did you know that many floods occur during the fall and winter months? It’s true! Frozen ground and fire-damaged soils do not absorb water well, which can be a big problem during times of heavy precipitation. Mid-winter snow melt can be another problem. Here’s how you can prepare for a wintertime flood:
- Purchase flood insurance if you’re at risk. Flood insurance policies have a 30-day waiting period, so you’ll want to plan ahead to make sure you’re covered this winter. Take the time to discuss flood insurance with your agent, make sure you understand your deductible, and know what is and isn’t covered.
- Take preventative steps. Flood damage can be reduced by making sure your property is properly maintained. Is your yard properly graded to ensure that water runs away from the house and not right to it? Are your gutters and downspouts clear of debris and directed away from your home?
- Have a home evacuation plan in place. In many areas of the country, wildfires have increased the risk of floods in many residential neighborhoods. Make sure everyone in your family knows the safest route to get out of your home in the event of flash flooding and where they should meet up with you.
