We may all long for spring after a long winter, but the seasonalso is known for tornadoes, flooding and other storm events! If you have had wind damage to your home or auto before, then you know this is a real threat and you must have proper insurance coverage to protect yourself and your property from wind damage. Coverage for wind damage typically is part of your homeowner’s and your automobile insurance policies.
Damage to automobiles
Damage to your automobile from wind damage is not covered under your homeowner’s insurance, but rather under the comprehensive portion of your automobile insurance policy.
If you have damage to your auto after a wind storm, you should contact us as soon as possible to report the claim. Once an adjustor has made an assessment, you can get your vehicle repaired. Wind damage claims are subject to the comprehensive deductible of your automobile policy.
Damage to homes from wind
Your homeowner’s policy provides coverage for damage to your home and other covered properties caused by a tornado or other high-wind storm. Your homeowner’s policy provides some coverage for wind damage including:
- Damage to your dwelling or other covered structures
- Additional living expenses while you are unable to live in your home
- In some cases, emergency funds to cover immediate expenses
- Removal of trees from your dwelling (If the tree has fallen on your home and caused damage)
- Temporary boarding of domestic pets
- Medical payments to third parties who were injured on your property
Filing a wind damage claim
When making a wind damage claim, you should have already made an inventory of all your property and valuables. This list should describe each item, including the value, age, make, model and serial number. Videos and pictures are also useful tools to record data about your valuables. Document your loss and report the claim immediately.
Once you have reported the claim, your insurance company will send an adjustor and then schedule any needed repairs so you can begin living in your home again or driving your car after damage caused by a wind storm. All wind-related claims are subject to policy deductibles. Make temporary repairs to your home to prevent any further damage and keep all your receipts so you can be reimbursed for any additional living expenses you incur such as food and temporary lodging while your home is being repaired.
